The UK has centuries of maritime history submerged around its coastline. Ever since the invention of the aqualung, divers have been rediscovering this history. Many of the wrecks remaining to be discovered lie in deep water, requiring not only technical diving skills but also a knowledge of ship layout and construction, and often archaeological techniques. A number of GUE groups around the country are currently researching shipwrecks. See the GUE groups pages and look at the DIR-UK and POE pages for more information and how to get involved.

GUE divers worldwide have a certain connection with cave diving – the WKPP in Florida gave birth to GUE. For many members of GUE in the UK, cave diving is their preferred type of diving. Exploration within the UK, however, is really the domain of the Cave Diving Group, as the techniques required to explore UK caves are quite different to those employed by a typical GUE diver. GUE-UK divers are however, actively exploring caves in France and more recently in Bosnia. Here the clear waters and large passageways are ideally suited to our skills and techniques. Some of our members dive with the WKPP, and also the EKPP, demonstrating the concept that GUE divers can slot easily into any project around the globe with relative ease. Take a look at the groups for a taste of the cave projects going on.
